I'm actively reorganizing this page as of today, 30 May. If you see things changing in strange ways, that would be why.

This site is in development to support the early PDS4 data standards prototyping exercises and releases, intended for both internal and external users.

2013-05-23: I'm in the process of updating the info here for the official Release 1.0.0.0 version of the schemas. It's not very different from the 3b version, but I needed to update for that anyway. Check the "last change" dates for each page to see if I've gotten there yet. -Anne.

2013-05-30: I believe I've completed the Release 1.0 updates. If you see something that looks wonky, let me know.

Examples

Mechanics

How to do things - questions and answers:

  • How-To - Quick tutorials on specific tasks or problems, including things like setting up editors and running validators, or understanding what you're typing into the PDS4 labels.
  • Questions - If you have questions about the mechanics of creating labels, using the XML tools, what you can and can't do in terms of structure, etc., this is the place. We'll try to answer them ASAP.
  • Templates - Here I'll post commented XML templates of SBN label archetypes. You can use these as starting points for making new labels, rather than starting from scratch and the PDS master schema.

References

Here are some intros and background material for those new to the process:

  • XML Primer for PDS4 - If you have no idea what any of this XML stuff is about, read this page for some basic context and terminology.
  • Understanding XML Catalog Files - XML Catalog files have nothing to do with archiving or PDS3 catalog files. Rather, they provide a method for referencing schemas that makes life easier for those working on large or multiple projects, who like to keep their workspace nicely divided and organized.

And here is local documentation:

  • Standard Values Quick Reference - A compilation of the standard values used for common attributes in the core classes, with notes of particular relevance to SBN data preparers. The attributes are listed alphabetically, and standard value lists for different contexts (containing classes, that is) are listed under those, where applicable. The list doesn't include meanings for the values, largely because they are not yet available - publicly or privately.
